In modern society media plays a major role in providing cycled information to the people, employment, income and consumption. Over the years consistent with growth in this field and have also become very sophisticated. Journalism involves the various works such as reporting, writing, editing, photographing, broadcasting or cable casting news items. It also helps us in the development of nation and makes the people aware of the events or the daily happenings in the society. We can conclude this by saying that it is a specific approach to the reality. Newspapers, radio, television and more recently the internet are various means of spreading information and journalists have a very significant role to play in this practice.
Journalism can be defined as “a discipline of collecting analyzing, verifying, presenting news regarding current events, trends, issues and people. Those who practice journalism are known as journalists.
People generally have question in their in mind as in when was journalism initially initiated so the answer to this question is that in India it was Raja Ram Mohan Roy published out first free newspapers magazines in 1821 and he tried to cover all readers in India.
To become a journalist the person should possess the qualities like language skills the person should be able to write well fluently without any grammatical errors, passion in which you must have desire to become a journalist that is passionate towards your career, curiosity the person must be ready to find more and more information whenever required and must always be ready to learn new things every time, general awareness would include everything be it contemporary issues or anything and lastly long working hours where you will have to denote every single second to your profession whenever it demands and which makes an end to your social life.
Educational Qualification
Now a day’s many institutes are offering this course but bachelor’s degree or post-graduate degree in journalism/mass communication is required to pursue a career in this field. Minimum eligibility for Bachelor degree in journalism is 10+2 and for Post graduate degree courses a Bachelor degree in journalism. Some institutes also provide one year certificate courses like sports, television, photo, press law etc are fields in journalism for which eligibility is 10+2 which improve your job prospects further.
Job Prospects
The role of the press is to be a watchdog in the society and it is considered to be the voice of people about corruption and which further helps the socialist in their various campaigns, the government and the use and misuse of the power. It acts as a link in the society between individual and the world. One can find employment with newspapers, periodicals and magazines, central information service, press information bureau, websites, AIR and TV channels like Doordarshan, Star News, and Sahara etc and at the same time the person can go for freelancing where also people get paid well.
Career Options
There are various options available in this field which are as follows:
- Editing: – The editor is the key head who is responsible for the overall appearance of the news. They even look into the quality of the content and veracity of the content. They are even responsible for coordinating with the other department and lastly ensure that reporters and sub editors do their work. Sub editor jobs are the entry level jobs.
- Writing: – Writers are also divided into the feature writer work on the stories and commentaries of a specific topic, leader writer is to work upon the ideas and views on a news topic, columnist will have to work upon the specific segment of the newspaper or a magazine and critic work would be related to the knowledge related to film, drama, literature or art etc.
- Reporting: – Reporters job involves the travelling job as in where the person is required to visit the place where event took place to gather all the information and facts. Most of the reporters are assigned various areas of work where they go try and extract all the information from the particular place.
- Photography:- Photo journalist is considered to be the most glamorous version of the newspaper. The places they visit involve a element of danger also because sometime the visiting may include where the mishappening has happened or it could take place.
- Others: – The other departments include production, advertising, legal affairs department, circulation and public relations.
Remuneration
The minimum salary at the entry level as per government directive has to be Rs. 8,000 to Rs. 12,000 for reporters and senior reporters, Rs. 5000 to Rs. 10,500 the chief reporters and sub-editors, and Rs. 7500 to 12000 for editors. Actual salaries offered depend on the company one is working with and can be anything from very high to very low but at higher level that is after gaining experience one can earn upto Rs 20,000 to Rs.50, 000. Travel and stay expenses as well as allowances are additional with all pay packets. Freelancers are paid for each piece of work they submit and earn a good amount by working as a freelancer.
