Common Admission Test, better known as CAT is conducted on a national level by Indian Institutes of Management on a rotational basis. It is an online test which is comprised of 3 major sections: Quantitative Aptitude, Verbal Ability, Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning.

The importance of this exam can be gauged from the fact that its score is used by all big wigs in management education – IIMs, IITs, NITs, FMS and IISc in deciding the candidature of students and their eligibility of admission in these prestigious institutions. Given that almost 2.5 lakh students every year sit for this examination, the competition is immense but the seats are few, only about 4000 seats are available.

In addition to the regular course, PG Diploma in Management Programme is also being offered through CAT Examination. Normally it is conducted in the month of November every year, and this year is no different, with details published around July.


CAT 2016 Eligibility Criteria

As with every exam, before filling the online application form, one should ensure that he/she meets the eligibility criteria for appearing in the examination which are listed below:

  • A graduation degree in any stream.
  • Minimum marks at graduation level – at least 50% or equivalent CGPA (this is 45% in case of SC/ST and Differently Abled).
  • Final year students may also apply; given that they should complete graduation the year for which they are applying.


Reservation of Seats

As per Indian government rulebook, SCs will be reserved 15% seats, STs candidates 7.5%, 27% seats for OBC under Non-Creamy Layer and 3% seats will be reserved for the persons with disabilities. All these are subject of variation. The reservation must be claimed while submitting the admission form, post which it would not be changed or accepted. A proof of reservation category is also to be submitted.


Registration for CAT 2016

IIMCAT.AC.IN is the official website for CAT 2016 examination which would announce the exam in the month of August 2016, where the candidates have to login and register. Normally 2 months are available to register, and after closing of registration, the student will be allotted test centre from one of the three options which he/she entered before while submission.Then, students have to regularly check the website as admit card will be issued here.


Payment of Registration Fee

Last year prices for the examination were: 1600 INR for general category and OBS students in Non-Creamy layer. 800 INR is for those from SC/ST/Person with Disability. Registration fee once paid will not be refunded under any circumstances. Credit / Debit Card and Net banking options are also available for online payment.


Admission Procedure

The admission to all affiliated institutes will be done on the basis of score in CAT following which written ability test, group discussion round and personal interview rounds happen and the scores obtained from all is summed up to arrive at a percentile score. The higher the score, greater is the chance of securing admission in of your favourite institutions. In addition to these, various variables like academic background and performance, working background may be considered.


Exam Pattern

Consisting of 100 questions in total, the total time for attempting them is 3 hours (180 minutes), with 60 minutes for each section.  Each correct answer will be awarded 3 marks, whereas an incorrect answer will have a penalty of 1 mark. Unanswered questions would be left blank. All questions may not be Multiple Choice questions; hence students must be ready for any eventuality. On screen calculator has been allowed to be used for the first time in 2015 edition of the exam.

CAT 2016 Admit Card

The admit card will be available in IIM website from mid of October till the date of examination. Candidates must check for any changes in particulars mentioned in the admit card, and if any changes communicate with them. There is no alternative mode available for grievance redressal.


CAT 2016 Result

The result of the examination is announced usually in the last week of December through the official site of the authority. The result may be obtained from the website of IIM by filling their particulars which is asked in the form.
