Civil Services Aptitude Test, 2011
For the candidates who aspire to enter into Indian civil services which has been considered to be the backbone of the Indian government functioning which offers very competitive and challenging jobs like IAS (Indian Administrative Service), IPS (Indian Police Service), IFS (Indian Foreign Service), IRS (Indian Revenue Service) and numerous other services after the candidates clearing the entrance they enjoy their job with lots of power and prestige. This exam is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) in various centers throughout India and which is responsible for implementation of executive decisions of the government. The Central and the State Civil Servants ensure protection of citizens’ rights to constitutional guarantees and entitlements.
The current pattern was designed in 1979 which was approximately 41 years before since then the preliminary pattern has been consistent with some or the other minor changes in ten or fifteen years but now in the year 2011 they have to prepare for the preliminary examination as the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has received the Union Government’s approval for introducing the Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT).
In short from the beginning of the year 2011, the preliminary section of the civil services examination shall witness the changes which are the removal of the optional subject, the introduction of Civil Services Aptitude Test and there will be two papers of equal weight Paper I will be of general awareness which will help in checking the candidates awareness about the happenings be it in past or current and Paper II will be the Aptitude test-CSAT which shall be to measure the comprehension skills, interpersonal skills, logical reasoning and analytical ability, decision making and problem solving skills, general mental ability and basic numeracy and data interpretation.
About 3, 00,000 people are expected to take the test and about 11,000 people will be qualified for the Civil Services (Mains) Exam.
Pattern of CSAT
The CSAT has two compulsory Papers of 200 marks each and of two hours duration each and all questions are of objective nature. The marks scored in the CSAT are used for determining qualified candidates for the Civil Services (Mains) Exam only but which are not carried forward in the next stage that is in the main exam of civil service.
Paper I tests the general awareness of the candidate.
Paper II tests the comprehension skills, interpersonal skills, logical reasoning and analytical ability, decision making and problem solving skills, general mental ability and basic numeracy and data interpretation which would extent to the problem solving of Class X.
Syllabus for CSAT
The candidates should keep the following points in mind while preparing for the exam. The syllabus is as follows:
Paper I – (200 marks) Duration: Two hours
• Current events of national and international importance
• History of India and Indian National Movement
• Indian and World Geography – Physical, Social, Economic geography of India and the World.
• Indian Polity and Governance – Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc.
• Economic and Social Development – Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector Initiatives, etc.
• General issues on Environmental ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate Change – that do not require subject specialization
• General Science.
Paper II- (200 marks) Duration: Two hours
• Comprehension
• Interpersonal skills including communication skills
• Logical reasoning and analytical ability
• Decision making and problem solving
• General mental ability
• Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude etc.), Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency etc.)
• English Language Comprehension skills
Important Dates
• CSAT 2011 will be held on June 12, 2011.
• The notification for CSAT will be carried my all major newspapers of India on February 19, 2011.
Pass score for CSAT
CSAT is an elimination test for the candidates appeared for the test; the top candidates in each category will be qualified to the next stage. So, the cut-off or the pass score always vary each year depending on the caliber of the candidates taking the exam, the difficulty level of the questions and the number of vacancies projected.
