IGNOU- The People’s University
The distance learning programme is also called as e-learning which is considered to be formalized teaching and a learning system which could be carried out smoothly and which would be less expensive. There are basic four reasons expanding access, alleviate capacity constraints, making money from emerging markets and catalyst for institutional transformation which after being analysed came up with the idea to set up university which could provide education from distance learning.
Indira Gandhi National Open University came into being on September 20, 1985, by an Act of Parliament (1985) to achieve the following objectives:
- democratizing higher education by taking education to the doorsteps of the learners;
- providing access to high quality education to all those who seek it irrespective of age, region or formal qualifications;
- offering need-based academic programmes by giving professional and vocational orientation to the courses;
- As an apex body, setting and maintaining standards in distance education in the country.

- IGNOU is the largest Open University and fifth largest University in the World.
- IGNOU played a vital role in the establishment of Distance Education Council (DEC) which is responsible for setting up standards in Distance Education in India
- IGNOU has a strong network of over 961 Study Centers spread across India. (data as on May 18, 2005)
- There are over 13 Lakh students enrolled (data as on Feb-2005)
- The University is a member of The Association of Indian Universities (AIU)

Admission Procedure:-
IGNOU Offers “Round the Year Admission” to its Programmes under the “Walk-in-admission” Scheme. Candidates can avail admission application forms at the Regional Centre/Study Centre, Headquarters and also can download the Prospectus and application forms from the university website at www.ignou.ac.in and can submit the same at the concerned Regional Centres either through Post on in Person. Application forms can be submitted online and programme fee can be paid online through internet gateway (both Credit and Debit Cards) cash deposits at designated banks and payment can also be made through Demand Drafts.
