What is Marine Engineering
Three fourth of our earth is water which makes Marine engineering much more exciting and challenging field for those who are passionate about sea and also love working with tools Marine engineering comes in two families
Sea Going Marine Engineering- These are the people this sight is specifically aimed at although there are some parts equally of interest to both
Shore Based Marine Engineering – These are people who do not study for certificate of competencies but instead follow an academic route which leads them to the research and development side
Marine Engineering is the discipline of the design and operation of mainly mechanical systems in a marine environment. Marine Engineering involves the design, construction, installation, operation and support of the systems and equipment which propel and control marine vehicles, and of the systems which make a vehicle or structure habitable for crew, passengers and cargo. Marine Engineering on board a ship refers to the operation and maintenance of the propulsion and other systems such as: electrical power generation plant; lighting; fuel oil; lubrication; water distillation; air conditioning; refrigeration; and water systems on board the vessel. This work is carried out by Marine Engineering Officers, who usually train via cadetships sponsored by a variety of Maritime organizations. There are also training centres at post-secondary institutions that offer marine engineering programs, such as Autonomous Underwater Vehicle research; Marine renewable energy research; and careers related to the Offshore Oil and Gas extraction and Cable Laying industries. Marine Engineering is allied to mechanical engineering, although the modern marine engineer requires knowledge (and hands-on experience) with electrical, electronic, pneumatic, hydraulic, chemistry, control engineering, naval architecture or ship design, process engineering, steam generation, gas turbines and even nuclear technology on certain military vessels.
SCOPE of Marine Engineering
Shipping Industry Growth
Recent Studies world over, predict a steady growth of International Trade. What this means is, “Shipping” as a mode of international and intercontinental transport system can never go out of fashion – it being the easiest & still the cheapest mode!
Agreeably, advancement in Engineering techniques & technology has had an effect on growth in terms of increase in the number of ships plying the seven seas as compared to the increase in cargo volume movement. However, with advancement in Technology, the demand for Qualified Marine Engineers has increased exponentially. Consequently, students passing out of all the institutes have continued to remain as one of the most sought after with the Ship Owners, globally.
Public and private shipping companies are the main hirers of Marine engineers. Navy, engine production firms, ship building and designing firms, research bodies are some of the other firms where Marine engineers are highly in demand. Marine Engineers can take up employment in different foreign and Indian shipping companies and with the port and harbor departments. The latest developments in moving natural gas from ports to the pipeline, offer excellent opportunity for future graduates looking to work portside. They are in great demand in the oil and gas industry, where they have to design and build pipelines and other equipments.
Marine Engineers have lucrative career options abroad also. The American Bureau of Shipping, an internationally recognized organization, recruits fresher’s and trainees with almost no experience. The bureau deals with developing rules based on principles of naval architecture, marine engineering and related subjects. Other countries like France and U.K also recruit young marine engineers.
